Use Food to Banish Pain

Research has shown that food can help to fight pain naturally.  There’s certainly the comfort factor from eating, but certain foods have been shown to reduce inflammation, much like ibuprofen, but without the side effects.

Oranges were found to be particularly potent, with effects seen from drinking as little as one glass of freshly squeezed orange juice. Omega-3, such as from oily fish and some nuts and seeds also fought inflammation, with the omega-3 from fish oil being particularly potent.

Grapes contain resveratrol, which was found to block the specific cyclooxygenase enzyme that causes inflammation and pain, much like aspirin and ibuprofen, but without causing damage to the stomach lining.

Of course, you need to eat up your anti-oxidant-rich foods, like cabbages, tomatoes and avocados, for a variety of health reasons,  including pain management.

Nuts and seeds also have beneficial effects, as some nuts provide tryptophan, which has been shown to reduce pain sensitivity. It is also found in some dairy products and lentils.

Our rice and lentils recipe in The Money-Saving Cookbook, which uses lentils, dairy and sunflower oil, is a good place to start.

Adopting healthier eating habits can help with managing pain, and will provide overall benefits in the long run.
